The Historic Chattahoochee Commission (HCC) will host its thirty-second Annual Supper Meeting in Columbus, Georgia on September 25th. Acclaimed local historian and respected authority on Native American culture Billy Winn will provide our program. Retired from a long career in journalism, he has written about the rich history of the Chattahoochee Valley most of his adult life. Winn has written hundreds of articles about regional history and authored several books including the popular The Old Beloved Path: Daily Life Among the Indians of the Chattahoochee River Valley. His remarks at our annual meeting will focus on the largely unknown saga of Creek Removal from the Chattahoochee Valley, which he chronicles with flair in the forthcoming HCC publication, Triumph of the Eccunna Nuxulgee: A Moral Fable of the Old Southwest; Land Speculators, George M. Troup, and the Removal of the Creek Indians from Georgia and Alabama, 1825-1838.
The event, to be attended by people from throughout southwest Georgia and southeast Alabama, will be held at Green Island Country Club in Columbus. It is underwritten in part by the generous sponsorship of the Columbus Convention and Visitor’s Bureau, WC Bradley Company, Synovus, Uptown Columbus, Civitan International, Cable TV of East Alabama, the Dothan Convention and Visitor’s Bureau, Auburn University, Auburn-Opelika Tourism, the Eufaula-Barbour County Chamber of Commerce, and Clayton and Berry Penhallegon. Following supper, the HCC will present its prestigious Achievement Awards to individuals and organizations who have distinguished themselves in a variety of heritage tourism, education, and preservation programs. A special golf package rate of $69 (includes greens fee, cart and range balls) at the Country Club is available for meeting attendees the day of the event. The Hilton Garden Inn, located at 1500 Bradley Lakes Blvd., is our host hotel. The silent auction preview will begin at 5:30 PM EDT (4:30 PM CDT) followed by the social hour at 6:00 PM EDT (5:00 PM CDT). The dinner will begin at 7:00 PM EDT (6:00 PM CDT).
