Local Singer Wins $10,000 at the “State Farm’s Sing Your Way to the 2014 Steve Harvey Neighborhood Awards”
Atlanta, GA – Local entertainer, Fuscia, has made Columbus proud with her ‘angelic’ voice. Fuscia has won the “State Farm’s Sing Your Way to the 2014 Steve Harvey Neighborhood Awards”, receiving a check for $10,000. The finale took place on Friday, August 8, 2014 during the Freedom Friday All-White Party at the Georgia World Congress Center and was hosted by comedian Sheryl Underwood with a concert starring Kem and The O’Jays.
Judges for the contest were: Grammy, Stellar, Dove, American Music, NAACP Image, Soul Train Music and BET Awards winning artist Yolanda Adams; Tyler Perry play, movie and TV star David Mann and radio personality from the Steve Harvey Morning Show Carla Ferrell. “The decision of the judges was unanimous,” said Yolanda Adams. When asked about her big win, Fuscia said, “A long road traveled for your gift is far better than a twenty foot trip across the street. Hard work pays off and God will surely make room for your gift.”
With this being the inaugural Neighborhood Awards (formally the Hoodie Awards) in Atlanta after many years of calling Las Vegas, NV home, Atlanta is set to be the new location for future shows. Opening at the Georgia World Congress Center, The Steve Harvey Morning Show was taped to a live audience, eagerly wanting to see the comedic radio/TV host, along with his morning crew of Carla Ferrell, Nephew Tommy, Shirley Strawberry, and Junior. George Tandy, Jr. and John Legend entertained the audience.
The Neighborhood Awards is an annual event paying homage to outstanding community businesses in their respective areas such as: best barber shop (Columbus’ own Nappy Root Barber Show was nominated), best community leader, best church, best high school coach, best nail salon, and best school teacher just to name a few.
This year’s Neighborhood Awards show featured performances by: Johnny Gill, Keith Sweat, Tamela Mann, Robin Thicke, Chrisette Michelle, Indie.Arie, Neyo, and Anthony Hamilton. Infused throughout the weekend event were: educational, relationship, and financial seminars; concerts; contests and a 3 day expo with hundreds of vendors. Fuscia also gave an impromptu performance on Sunday at The State Farm pavilion.
About Fuscia - Lei Smith, aka Fuscia, was born and raised in Plainfield, NJ on West 6th Street, where she was in chorus at Clinton Elementary School, Hubbard Middle School and Plainfield High School. This sultry soulful, dynamic and expressive singer, who is making moves in the world of R&B and entrainment. She is far from timid when she hits those notes that make you say, “she can sang”; elevating you on an emotional high. Singing with her church choir at Calvary Baptist Church in Plainfield, NJ, is where it all began at the age of eight and she became a featured soloist, captivating audiences everywhere, by visiting other churches and anywhere she was invited to sing.
To further her singing career, she began performing with the group, One Step Beyond, traveling up and down the east coast. Fuscia continued her act as a solo artist to amplify her career and build a name in the industry as an artist to watch.
Fuscia’s soloist career intensified, allowing her to perform in some of New Jersey’s hottest clubs such as: the Peppermint Lounge, Brokers, Khay’s and many more. After touring the Jersey circuit, she took her solo act to legendary night clubs in New York: Nell’s Soul Cafe, Harlem’s Jimmy’s Uptown Café and Summertime’s Coffee Tuesday. One of the highlights of her career was gracing the stage of the legendary Apollo Theatre, winning a record time of four times at “Amateur Night at The Apollo”.
Her humble heart and soul has endured a streak of tragedies including: the death of her brother Kevin in November 2011; her mother, Pastor Eldora Johnson, in July 2013 and more recent, the sudden death of her son, Darnell Johnson in November 2013. Where most would have given up, she refuses to sit down on this God-given talent and gift she shares. She credits her strength to her faith in God and her church family, Kingdom Awareness (3503 17th St., Columbus, GA), under the spiritual leadership of Apostle Lewis Clemmons and First Lady Pastor Belinda Clemmons. Fuscia is on the praise and worship team at the church.
In addition to recently winning $10,000 in “State Farm’s Sing Your Way to the 2014 Steve Harvey Neighborhood Awards”, she has opened for Charlie Wilson, David and Tamela Mann; comedians Bruce Bruce and Earthquake. She sang at the Eddie Levert and Ronald Isley & The Isley Brothers concerts, setting the whole arena on fire. While in Columbus she has performed at “Live @ The Gallery, The Liberty Theater, Occasions, The Tony Parkman Show, and The Civic Center just to name a few places. Fuscia is currently in the studio working on her debut album.
